File extension xpi information

XPI install, also known as Cross-Platform Install files use file extension XPI. Their function is the distribution of plug-in extensions that used by Mozilla Firefox. In addition of being in the same class as ZIP files, they contain a good number of other files that have been compressed together or others that have been referenced by the same script. Installer packages can play a vital role in spreading computer viruses including Trojans because they are able to change configuration of the system, hence the recommendation is that packages need to be installed from those sources that are trusted contain a recently updated anti-virus software.
To open file extension XPI files, certain programs need to be installed. Firefox in most cases runs on different versions of Windows, Mac OS and Linux operating systems. Because they are compressed files, one needs to install the XPinstall program on both the Mac OS and Windows to make the opening of these files possible.
